PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, September 07 (AFP) - Cole Hamels, Jayson Werth, and manager Charlie Manuel of the Philadelphia Phillies put their unique stamp on one of the wackiest World Series in the history of Major League Baseball. Nothing has come easy for the Phillies this season and certainly not the circuitous route they followed to the second World Series championship in franchise history. "I am definitely going to enjoy this moment because there is lots of times you don`t have everything go your way," said Phillies starter Hamels, who was named World Series Most Valuable Player. "I was just fortunate enough to be on the good end of these victories and winning a trophy." Hamels pitched six innings and allowed two runs on five hits with three strikeouts as the Phillies beat Tampa Bay 4-3 in a rain-plagued game five to capture the 104th World Series. Hamels started game five but did not get the victory as he did not pitch in Wednesday`s restart, which lasted three innings. Officials suspended game five after five and half innings on Monday because of bad weather. Game five took three hours, 28 minutes to complete, with Wednesday`s restart lasting just 78 minutes. "That was the best I could possibly do," said Hamels of pitching in monsoon-like conditions on Monday before Major League Baseball pulled the players off the field

"I think the game could have easily gotten away from me. "And going into today it could have been a completely different game. We might be looking at heading down to Tampa to try and win it. "I feel like I succeeded even with all the hard conditions that were thrown my way." The 64-year-old Manuel, who lost his mother earlier this month, wasn`t taking his first World Series win as a manager for granted. June Manuel, 87, died before game two of the National League Championship series between the Phillies and the Los Angeles Dodgers. Asked what her reaction would be if he could call her, Manuel said, "I think she would be laughing and hollering. "She would be telling us how good a team I had and all that stuff. "And she would be saying she`s going to walk around Buena Vista and talk to everybody tomorrow. That is what she would be saying." Manuel said he savoured the final out like no other is his 25 years of coaching and managing pro teams. "I took it all in," he said. "I kind of laughed
.
I like every minute of it. It is actually bigger than I felt it would be like. "I have been in the World Series before as a coach, and this is way ahead of that." Phillies outfielder Werth comes from a family of major league baseball players. His grandfather Dick Schofield, won a World Series championship with the 1960 Pittsburgh Pirates. His uncle Dick Schofield Jr, won one with the Toronto Blue Jays in 1993. "I remember being in my grandparents` house when I was a little kid staring at the replica world championship trophy," said Werth, who went three-for-two with an RBI in game five. "I just got a chance to hold the real one so that brought back a lot of memories." Manuel said the players did a good job of sticking to the game plan on Wednesday. "Believe me, the things that go on here," he said. "It is kind of hectic and you can easily lose focus. You have to keep things in perspective because a lot goes on."
