The
Late Amir Sheikh Sabah Bin Jaber
A warm, Friendly individual, Sheikh
Sabah ruled Kuwait in paternalistic fashion. During
his reign, trade and revenues increased significantly.
He also negotiated the Anglo Kuwaiti maritime truce
of 1841.
His extensive knowledge of international
affairs greatly impressed colonel Pelly, who visited
Kuwait second time in 1865. In fact, the sheikh was
an avid reader of international newspapers and regularly
received the Arabic paper that was printed in France
so he could keep abreast of political developments
in the region as well as in the world.
